Austria: Top places to eat in Salzburg (and drink)

On my recent visit to Salzburg in Austria I was treated to some wonderful food thanks to my local guide so I thought I would write a post sharing my recommendations for the top places to eat in Salzburg for breakfast, lunch, dinner and beyond! I doubt I would have found these places myself, and they are awesome.

For breakfast in Salzburg: Cafe Classic

You have to try one of Salzburg’s classic cafes, complete with 1950s architecture. Popular places like Café Classic are open all day. I loved that people were drinking sparkling wine with breakfast on a Saturday morning. And the meticulous food presentation here and everywhere I ate. And the perfect tea timer!

For brunch/lunch in Salzburg: Café Fingerlos

After my walking on the Gaisberg the day before I was ready for a meaty brunch and Café Fingerlos delivered.

It was delicious but another highlight was the bircher-style porridge or muesli.

And the cakes at the end…

For dinner in Salzburg: M32

This is the pinnacle of dining out in Salzburg, literally. Incorporated in the city’s Museum of Modern Art high up on the cliffs of the Monksberg, M32 (stands for No. 32 Monksberg) offers spectacular views over the old town and the fortress – both from the terrace and the tables inside. This is fine dining with excellent service.

For a drink in Salzburg

I have already talked about the Augustiner monastery brewery and its great beer and classic Austrian food in a previous post so I wanted to mention a wonderful rooftop cocktail bar in Salzburg. It’s on the top of the Hotel Stein, which is just by the Staatsbrucke bridge on the opposite side of the river from the Old Town. Other options across in the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ at the edge of the old town (just go through the archway by the Nature Museum) include the Russ Bar.

Farther afield: Lake Fuschl

I had an amazing lunch of freshly-smoked trout with bread at a tiny fishery on the shores of Lake Fuschl – read my ‘day out from Salzburg’ post for more details of how to experience what is possibly my best lunch ever.
