The Swiss city of Geneva has long been synonymous with international peace-keeping organisations and the headquarters of the International Red Cross, but few people realise that this enchanting destination is steeped in culture and history.
Travelling to Geneva
Geneva is very easy to reach. You can travel to the city by road or rail and you’ll be delighted to learn that Geneva flights are affordable and convenient with various departure points. For example, if you wish to fly to the city from the UK, you’ll discover that most provincial airports will be able to connect you with this beautiful lakeside city.
Small city with a global reputation
Even though Geneva is relatively small, its population is only 200,000, many of the world’s most important organisations have their headquarters here in Switzerland. These organisations range from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and TB, to the European Organisation for Nuclear research (CERN). The city isn’t just about institutions, though. Many visitors come to Geneva as a result of the stunning surrounding scenery, Lake Geneva and the nearby Swiss mountains, as well as the city itself.
Sightseeing in and around Geneva
If you want to discover Geneva’s secrets, then start your journey at the water jet by the shores of Lake Geneva. Constructed in 1886, this amazing burst of water, known by the locals as the ‘Jet d’Eau de Geneve’, climbs up over 140 metres into the sky. Geneva’s beautiful countryside is easily accessible from the city. Make your way to the nearby village of Hermance. This charming medieval site is right on the lakeside and is ideal for anyone who wishes to escape the pressures of the city and just wants to spend a peaceful time by the lake. There is also a nearby campsite, should you wish to prolong your stay.
Geneva for Chocolate lovers
Anyone who wants to learn about the chocolate production should take the time to visit the Chocolaterie Stettler on Avenue Blanc. Places on the tour must be booked in advance but once you’re there, you’ll be able to discover the whole process behind the manufacture of delicious truffles and other confectioner’s delights and you’ll also be invited to taste some of these delicious concoctions.
Whether you’re visiting the city for business or pleasure, try to spend some time relishing Geneva’s wonderful atmosphere and exploring the City of Peace.
