A divine experience: the great outdoors in Greece

Rich with history, Greece draws millions of travellers every year to take holidays to walk alongside the famous mythological Greek gods. Cluttered with amazing islands, this is a country where crystal clear water greets you, rolling hills wait to be hiked, the weather is temperate and the outdoors begs you to come explore. Here’s why Greece is the perfect destination for those looking for some adventure.

Kayaking over a sunken city

Many of us have kayaked in the ocean or over a calm lake, but how many people can say they’ve kayaked in clear water over an ancient city? You can do just that on a tour around Argolida, where a small sunken city awaits visitors who take on the kayaking challenge. Intrepid explorers can discover many other sites, ranging from caves and gorges, to some beautifully preserved ruins. In fact the best preserved ancient Greek theatre, the Epidaurus Theatre, is situated nearby. You’ll be amazed at the acoustics, where even the lightest whisper seems to reverberate throughout the theatre.

Follow in the footsteps of Jason and the Argonauts

In the centre of Greece lies Pelion, home of the mythical Jason and the Argonauts, Achilles, and many other heroes of Greek mythology. On a vacation in Greece, travellers can come  retrace their footsteps on winding trails leading you through mushroom-filled forests and coastlines crashing with surf. You can also go horseback through the rocky trails, leading you to lush ravines and waterfalls. Along the way you’ll come across abandoned villages and settlements,  all leading to an unforgettable trekking experience.

Snorkel or Scuba dive

Greece offers some of the most beautiful snorkelling and scuba diving locations in the world. There are plenty of places to swim with marine life, but the most scenic might be in Skopelos. Here you can explore caverns, see wrecks, and swim around above reefs. Fans of “Mamma Mia” (including secret fans!) will recognise the island as the beautiful, natural setting for the film.

Go spelunking

For outdoor enthusiasts that deem hiking a bit too tame, there’s always caving, or spelunking. Greece is filled with caves both large and small, and you can crawl, climb, and hike through most of them. There’s a certain feeling that comes with crawling in the dark, with only a small light guiding the way, waiting until the whole cave opens up, allowing you to gaze at its majesty. You’ll always remember the time you went exploring the ancient caves of Greece.
